The USS Scorpius is a Galaxy class starship, commissioned in 2375. The Galaxy class was developed to replace the ageing Ambassador and Oberth class starships as Starfleets primary exploration vessel. The design was initiated in 2343 with a highly challenging specification which called for a ship based on the Nebula design then being developed, but equally capable of scientific, exploration, diplomatic, cultural, and combat roles all within a single multi-mission hull. In fact, many came to regard the requirement as too challenging; the project suffered from numerous delays due to a wide range of design, manufacturing, and construction problems. The first of the class, the USS Galaxy, was launched in 2357 and commissioned in 2362, nearly two decades after initial approval. |

Main Bridge
|
Primary operational control of the USS Scorpius is
provided by the Main Bridge, located at the top of the Saucer Module on
Deck 1. The Main Bridge directly supervises all primary mission
operations and coordinates all departmental activities.
The central area of the bridge provides seating and displays for the captain and two other officers. Directly fore of the command area are the Operations Manager and the Flight Control Officer, both of whom face the main viewer. Aft of the command area is an elevated platform on which is located the tactical control station. Also located on the platform are five workstation, nominally configured as Science I, Science II, Mission Operations, Environment, and Engineering. On the Scorpius, the Science II workstation has been reconfigured to act as a Communications station. |
Recreational Facilities
|
The social and cultural center of the USS Scorpius is Ten
Forward, located as the name implies on deck 10 in the foremost part of
the ship. Hosted by a civilian Ferengi named Nar, Ten Forward is a place
for every off-duty crew member to relax and spend their spare time.
Using a combination of shaped forcebeams, replicator technology, tractor beams to create movement, and other devices, the holographic environment simulator in the Holodecks and holographic simulator rooms creates three-dimensional images of simulated environments. The Holodeck is a favorite place for personnel to spend their leisure time, but it is also used for simulations of all kinds as well as a training device. |
Engineering
|
The Main Engineering control center on Deck 36 serves as a master control for the ship's warp propulsion system, as well as the impulse propulsion system and other engineering systems. Main Engineering also serves as a backup in the event of failure on the Main Bridge and the Battle Bridge. Work stations at this location can be reconfigured to emulate Conn, Ops, Tactical, and other command operations. This is a desirable site for such functions because of its protected location within the Engineering sections and its proximity to key warp propulsion system components. The engineering section also houses the backup computer core. The two main cores are located in the primary hull. Crew interface for the computer is provided by the Library Computer Access and Retrieval System, or LCARS. Memory storage for the main core is provided by 2,048 dedicated memory modules of 144 isolinear optical storage chips. Under LCARS software control, these modules are capable of accessing information at 4,600 kiloquads per second. The total storage capacity of each module is about 630,000 kiloquads. |
Medical Facilities
|
The Medical department, under the direction of the Chief Medical Officer, is principally located in two sickbay facilities on deck 12. The primary facility, located in the port side of the ship, consists of two medical intensive-care wards, an attached laboratory, the CMO's office, and a small nursery. The second facility, located on the starboard side of the ship, is similar to the primary sickbay, but features two dedicated surgery suits, a physical therapy facility, a nursery, and a null-grav therapy ward. Adjacent to the second facility is a dental care office and biohazard isolation unit. |
